To put it simply, the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system.
Considered one of Australia’s and the world’s most remarkable natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef consists of over 2900 individual reefs and 900 islands. The reef stretches over 2300 kilometres along the north east coast of Australia. The incredible site boasts a large variety of marine life and beauty, including 400 types of coral, 1500 species of fish, and 4000 types of molluscs.
Things to do
We are extremely lucky to be able to explore the Great Barrier Reef and have the chance to see it with our own eyes. With a range of activities available, from exploring different islands to getting in the water, you’ll discover the true beauty of this part of the world.
Snorkelling
One of the best ways to view the underwater world is by snorkelling. You’ll witness marine life swimming beneath you and see the different varieties of coral. Even if you haven’t tried snorkelling before, you can give it a go while on the Great Barrier Reef, there is no better time or place to do it!
Diving
If you’re able to go diving, it’s a remarkable experience when visiting the Great Barrier Reef. Scuba diving is more popular as it allows you to go deeper into the water and explore more of the reef. However, helmet diving is another option where you walk along the seabed, and it requires no swimming skills!
Even if you’re a beginner scuba diver or helmet diver, you can still participate!
Glass bottom boat
A glass bottom boat offers the experience of seeing the reef and all the underwater creatures without getting in the water. The boat is perfect for young families, seniors, and those who prefer not to swim.
Green Island
A 45 minute boat ride from Cairns will take you to Green Island, the only coral cay within the Great Barrier Reef with a rainforest! Surrounded by glistening blue waters, Green Island offers opportunities to explore the water through snorkelling or diving, or you can stay inland and walk through the rainforest and relax on the beach.
Pontoon
There are currently three pontoons situated on the reef, providing great day’s entertainment. The pontoons sit on the outer reefs where there are waterslides, glass bottom boats, and ways to go snorkelling and diving! Join a pontoon tour and experience the enjoyment of being out in the Great Barrier Reef for the day.
Whitsunday Islands
The Whitsunday Islands are the most tropical island resorts within the Great Barrier Reef. Consisting of 74 paradise islands, the Whitsundays welcomes those who want to relax by the turquoise waters and white sand with a drink.
Take part in a day tour of the Great Barrier Reef and spend the day enjoying the beautiful world heritage listed site! Take time to go snorkelling and diving and swim with the turtles and other marine life.
