The Great Barrier Reef is undoubtedly one of the most unique and unbelievably beautiful destinations in the whole world!

A visit to the reef is absolutely worth it and somewhere you cannot miss out on when travelling Australia.

The largest coral reef in the world

The Great Barrier Reef is by far the largest coral reef in the world. It stretches over 2,300 kilometres along the East coast of Australia and encompasses more than 2,900 vibrant individual reefs and over 900 pristine islands. To put that into perspective, the Great Barrier Reef is roughly the same size as the area of Japan and is clearly visible from space.

Must do’s when visiting the reef

  • 1. Snorkelling and scuba diving

The absolute number one activity you must do in the Great Barrier Reef is jump into the pristine waters and snorkel or scuba dive through the reef. You will be in awe of the vibrant coral and unique marine life that call the reef home. Head out on a day tour to the reef where you will spend the day cruising and admiring the stunning views that surround you. Most day trips to the reef give you the option to snorkel and upgrade to scuba diving, which is a must-do!

  • 2. Helicopter flight over the reef

A helicopter flight over the reef is a great way to get a glimpse into the actual size of the reef and all that it entails. From the air, you will be able to see the individual reefs, the islands and possibly even some awesome marine life. While admiring the views, your pilot will give you a great insight into the history of the Great Barrier Reef and lots of valuable knowledge and facts along the way.

  • 3. Check out the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays is one of Australia’s well-known destinations. Made up of 74 picturesque tropical islands, stunning white sands and turquoise water, the Whitsundays are truly one of the most beautiful places in the world. The islands are surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef and are jam-packed full of entertaining things to do while visiting.

  • 4. Head to the Daintree Rainforest

The Daintree Rainforest is the oldest rainforest in the world and is home to some of Australia’s most secluded and pristine land. North of Cairns and at the edge of the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree feels like a tropical oasis far from civilisation. Take a trip through the Daintree, exploring the wilderness and marvelling at the million-year-old landscapes. Be sure to visit the town of Cape Tribulation and learn about the significance of the Daintree Rainforest and the unique history.
