Upolu Reef surrounds Upolu Cay, a small pristine sand cay that can often disappear during large storms, but the reef remains intact! Located about 30 kilometres from Cairns, Upolu Reef is part of the breathtaking Great Barrier Reef, comprising one of its 2900 individual reefs.

Things to do on Upolu Reef

  • Snorkelling

The reef features clear, shallow waters that are perfect for snorkelling. Even if you have never snorkelled before, you can try it and seize the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Great Barrier Reef!

Spend some time admiring the colourful coral as it sways with the currents, accompanied by a range of marine life swimming beneath you.

  • Scuba diving

Upolu Reef is also known for its coral walls, making it ideal for scuba diving and exploration of bommies. The clear waters provide excellent visibility, allowing you to spot marine life at eye level!

While you are in the water, keep your eyes peeled for various marine species, including clownfish, also known as Nemo! Upolu Reef boasts a healthy population of clownfish living among the coral, so you should be able to see quite a few swimming around. Other species you might encounter include white-tipped reef sharks and some large barracudas!
